The Verdict
For most authors selling ebooks from their own website, Payhip costs less per sale and gives you a more complete storefront with stronger marketing tools. Gumroad is simpler to start, has a marketplace that can bring occasional new buyers and handles sales tax for you as merchant of record. Choose Payhip if you want the lowest fees and a branded author shop. Choose Gumroad if you value its creator community and Discover marketplace, or want tax collection handled entirely for you.
The Basics
Gumroad lets creators sell digital products, memberships and courses through simple product pages and a profile. There is no monthly fee; Gumroad takes a percentage of each sale, with a higher rate on sales that come through its Discover marketplace. Since 2025, it has acted as merchant of record, collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT on your sales.
Payhip lets you build a branded online shop for ebooks, courses, memberships, coaching and physical products. It has a free plan with a small transaction fee and two paid plans that lower or remove that fee. Payment processing is handled by the Stripe or PayPal account you connect, which charges its own fees.

Fees at Real Ebook Prices
Gumroad's fixed $0.50 per sale makes a big difference at typical ebook prices. Here is what each platform's platform fee leaves you, before payment processing on either side:
| Ebook price | Gumroad direct (10% + $0.50) | Payhip Free (5%) |
|---|---|---|
| $4.99 | $3.99 | $4.74 |
| $9.99 | $8.49 | $9.49 |
| $19.99 | $17.49 | $18.99 |
At $4.99, Gumroad's platform fee is about 20% of the price, while Payhip's free plan takes 5%. Even after Payhip's processor charges, which on a standard card are a few percent plus a small fixed amount, Payhip usually leaves you more per ebook.
Sales through Gumroad's Discover marketplace cost 30%, which is steep for an ebook, but those are buyers you might not have reached otherwise.
When Payhip's Paid Plans Pay Off
Moving from Payhip's free plan to Plus saves 3% of your sales for $29 a month, so it pays off once you sell roughly $970 a month through Payhip. Pro saves a further 2% for $70 more a month, which makes sense around $3,500 a month in sales. Most authors selling only ebooks will stay on the free plan for a long time, and that is fine.
Gumroad has no plans to choose from. Its fee is the same whether you sell $50 or $5,000 a month, which keeps things simple but means high-volume sellers keep paying the full percentage.
Storefront and Branding
Payhip is built to be your shop. You can customize its look, add your logo, organize products into collections, and embed buy buttons or the whole store in your author website. Readers feel they are buying from you, not from a platform.
Gumroad gives you a clean creator profile and product pages with simple customization. It is quick to set up and looks professional, though it feels more like a page on Gumroad than a shop of your own.
Product Pages That Sell
Whichever platform you choose, the product page does the selling. Readers buying direct cannot rely on star ratings and also-bought lists, so give them what they need to decide: a sharp cover image, a description that opens with the hook rather than background, the format and length, and a free sample chapter. Both platforms let you upload preview files or add sample text, and both support simple testimonials or review quotes in the description. A page that answers "is this for me?" in the first few lines converts far better than one that lists every feature of the book.
Marketing Tools
Both platforms let you offer free downloads to grow your mailing list, create discount codes and run affiliate programs. Payhip goes further with upsells and cross-sells at checkout, bundles, coupons with detailed rules and PDF stamping that adds the buyer's details to files to discourage sharing. Gumroad offers pay-what-you-want pricing, which some authors use for launch promotions or to let fans pay more.
Both include basic email tools to message buyers, though many authors keep their main newsletter on a dedicated email service and connect it.
Selling More Than Ebooks
Both platforms handle much more than single ebooks, which matters if your author business grows into courses or memberships.
- Bundles: both let you sell several books together at one price, a simple way to raise the average order and reduce Gumroad's per-sale fixed fee relative to the total.
- Courses: both can host online courses, for example a writing course built on a nonfiction book.
- Memberships: both support recurring memberships, such as a monthly story club or early access to chapters.
- Physical products: both can list physical items, such as signed paperbacks, that you pack and ship yourself.
If you plan a wider product range, try building one bundle and one course on each platform's free option before committing.
Switching Later
Neither platform locks you in. Your files, product descriptions and prices can be recreated elsewhere in an afternoon, and both let you export customer lists so you can keep in touch with buyers. The main cost of switching is updating links in your back matter, website and newsletter, so use a link you control, such as a page on your own site, rather than printing a platform's URL in your books.
Marketplace Discovery
Gumroad's Discover marketplace lists products across many categories, and books do sell there, though they compete with courses, design assets and software. It can bring a trickle of new buyers at the higher 30% fee.
Payhip has essentially no marketplace, so every buyer comes from your own marketing. If you want a store where readers browse for books, a bookstore such as BooksOasis, which charges a flat plan and pays the full ebook price, can sit alongside either platform.
Taxes and Paperwork
Gumroad's merchant of record status is a real advantage for some authors. Gumroad collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales, which removes a compliance headache when selling digital products to buyers in many countries.
With Payhip, the sale is made through your connected payment account. Payhip offers tools to help with tax on digital sales, but check how its current setup applies to your region and whether you need to register or report anything yourself.
